Unsentenced prisoners
At 30 June 2015:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander unsentenced prisoners accounted for 27% (2,667 prisoners) of all unsentenced prisoners. (Table 8)
- The most common charge for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander unsentenced prisoners was acts intended to cause injury (44% or 1,185 prisoners), followed by unlawful entry with intent (14% or 363 prisoners). For non-Indigenous unsentenced prisoners the most common charge was acts intended to cause injury (25% or 1,828 prisoners), followed by illicit drug offences (19% or 1,368 prisoners). (Table 8)
- The median time spent on remand by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander unsentenced prisoners was 2.2 months, compared to 3.0 months for non-Indigenous unsentenced prisoners. Time on remand as reported in the Prisoner Census is time on remand to date as at 30 June 2015, and not the total time spent on remand. Time on remand is influenced by a number of factors, particularly the time it takes for a case to come before a court. (Table 12)
